Claudio Monteverdi’s 1608 opera ā€œAriannaā€ is best-known for the title character’s lament sung by Isabella Andreini. Contemporary voices praised the depth of expression and the power of affect in this continuo-accompanied piece for solo voice. The interest in this operatic scene now known as the ā€œLamento d’Ariannaā€ led to many transcriptions and finally also printed versions and contrafacts being circulated, such as the Marian lament ā€œPianto della Madonnaā€ from 1640/41, which is available in this edition.
